History of World Red Cross Day
May 8th is the birthday of Henry Dunan - The Swiss bushiness man who is the founder of Red Cross and recipient of first Nobel peace prize. First Red cross and red crescent day celebrations was organized on May 8th, 1948.
Why world red cross day is celebrated?
World Red Cross Day is celebrated every year to commemorate the big role that red cross and red crescent society volunteers are playing in life saving events as well as assisting the vulnerable social people all around the world.
About Red Cross and Red Crescent Society
There are around 97 million members and volunteers of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies serving over 170 countries worldwide.
World Red Cross societies and red crescent societies are the largest humanitarian network of the world offering relief to the disaster.
Symbol of Red Cross
A cross of red color on the white background is the symbol of Red Cross which was originated in the year 1864 in the Geneva Convention.
International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)
The International committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) was founded in 1863 in Geneva, Switzerland for managing people's disaster sufferings worldwide. Initially consisted of only 25 members.
Red Crescent Societies are affiliated and works in collaboration with the World Red Cross to assist the activities of the movement. There are around 186 recognized national societies approved by ICRC.
"Everywhere for Everyone" was the Red Cross theme in 2016.
Mr. Tadeteru Konoe is president of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and Mr. Peter Maurer is the president of the International Committee of the Red Cross.
Role of Red Cross Movement in current world
Today, over 200 years since the setting up of the Red Cross, its role has been significantly increased than before. Red Cross works amidst of three brutal wars in Asia. They are,
The war in Afghanistan, started and continuing from 1978 which has reported over 20 lakh fatalities.
The war in Irag, started from 2003 and raging more bittely today. According to "Iraq bodycount" thare has been around 10 lakh fatalities.
War in Syria termed as Syrian Civil War commenced on 2011, has taken 5,980 lives in 2017 alone as per "Syrian Observatory on Human Rights".
These wars ie in Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, Libia, Palestine etc are results of Westerna and US intervention in the internal affairs of those countries.
International Federation of Red Cross works for overall development, health, migration, risk reduction, providing shelter, recovery from disasters, capacity builiding, promoting principles and values, disaster and crisis management, disaster law, humanitarian logisitics, community engagement, volunteering and development of healthy youth.
Their hands spread over the whole world including Africa, Americas, Asia Pacific, Europe and Central Asia, Middle East and North Africa etc.
